Possible health risk alert for users of Poligrip, Fixodent, and other brands of denture cream. |
|
About 35 million Americans use denture creams to hold false teeth (dentures) in place. Yet, because denture creams are classified as a Class I medical device, the FDA does not require labels warning that excessive use of their product could result in zinc poisoning and lead to neurological problems. The university of Texas Southwestern Medical Center tested both Fixodent and Poligrip denture adhesives to determine Zinc levels. They found that both tubes contained excessive amounts of Zinc, which could lead to neuropathy and hypocupremia.
Blood analysis for zinc and copper levels are standard and can quickly determine if unhealthy mineral levels exist. The effects of zinc poisoning may be permanent, if not treated immediately.
Symptoms resulting from excessive intake of Zinc may include:
|
Neuropathy
-
Muscle weakness, muscle spasms, or difficulty moving
-
Numbness, tingling, pain and lack of strength in the extremities
-
Instability and loss of balance
-
Abnormal blood pressure, heart rate, ability to perspire, constipation, bladder dysfunction, and sexual dysfunction.
|
Hypocupremia
-
Copper deficiency, fatigue, paleness, skin sores, edema, slowed growth, hair loss, anorexia and diarrhea. It can also lead to immune system and cardiovascular problems.
|
Dysesthesias
- Abnormal sensations occurring when touching something, including burning, wetness, itching, electric shock and tingling
|
Parathesias
- Numbness, tingling, pinching, in the arms and legs, does not require touching or stimulus in order to experience symptoms
|
Anemia
- Reduction of healthy red blood cells, leads to fatigue and reduction of oxygen in the body.
