MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR SETTLEMENT FOR FAILURE TO DIAGNOSE STROKE

Paige, Trop & Ameen recently settled a medical malpractice case for 3.775 million dollars against a South Florida hospital and emergency room physician for failing to timely diagnose and treat a stroke. Our client, a 59 year-old locksmith, arrived at the hospital's Emergency Room shortly after experiencing a sudden onset of weakness, dizziness, nausea and slurred speech – classic signs of an early stroke. Instead of immediately calling for a neurologist to assess our client, the Emergency Room Physician ordered that he be "monitored" in a telemetry unit.

Doctors also failed to give our client a "clot busting" medication that would have dissolved the blood clot that was causing the stroke. Instead, they ordered that he be given aspirin to thin his blood. During the deposition of one of the nurses, however, Adam Trop uncovered that it took the nursing staff over seven hours to give our client the aspirin. By that time, the stroke had progressed from a minor event to a major, brainstem stroke.
