Crestor
Crestor (rosuvastatin) is a member of a family of drugs known as "Statins". Crestor is a medicine that lowers "bad" cholesterol and triglycerides and raises "good" cholesterol in the blood. Crestor reduces your cholesterol by blocking the liver from manufacturing cholesterol.
Crestor is marketed by the AstraZeneca Corporation (a large British pharmaceutical company). The FDA approved Crestor in August, 2003 despite concerns of potentially dangerous side effects such as proteinuria (protein in the urine) and rhabdomyolysis, (a dangerous condition where the muscles break down and release toxic chemicals into the bloodstream that hurt the kidneys).
Public Citizen, a group founded by Ralph Nader, opposed approval of Crestor because of its renal toxicity and concerns over reports of rhabodmyolysis during the clinical trials. Public Citizen has included Crestor on its "do not use" list of medications.
