What is Hernia Mesh?
Hernia mesh is surgically implanted in patients to provide support to tissue that has been damaged or weakened by the presence of a hernia. A hernia occurs when a body part or internal organ pushes through the tissue or muscle that would normally contain it. There are various types of hernias, including inguinal, incisional, femoral, and umbilical.
In surgery, surgeons will place the mesh on the area surrounding the hernia and attach it with glue, stitches, or staples. The mesh isn’t intended to be a permanent fix, as the mesh will degrade over time—instead, it’s meant to provide temporary support so new tissue can grow in its place. Currently, hernia mesh is used in 9 out of 10 hernia surgeries in the United States annually.
Hernia meshes come in various sizes and shapes depending on the nature of the hernia, including:
- Plugs, which are made to fit inside the hole in the issue
- Sheets, which are usually custom cut and fitted for the specific hernia
- Patches, which go under or over the damaged tissue
A lot of the meshes available as absorbable to degrade over time, but some are non-absorbable to remain in the body indefinitely. Some mesh is synthetic, while others are derived from animal tissue.
Am I Eligible for a Hernia Mesh Lawsuit?
Some specific hernia mesh implants have been reported to cause serious injuries to patients who underwent surgery, including pain, infection, bowel obstruction, tissue adhesion, and more. Atrium’s C-QUR mesh and Ethicon’s Phsyiomesh mesh are two specific types of implants that have been recalled by the FDA. Atrium’s C-QUR products were discovered to curl and deform while in the body, while the Physiomesh was revealed to contribute to high hernia recurrence rates. Other recalls include Bard and Davol’s Composix Kugel mesh and Atrium’s ProLite mesh patches.
Some other known complications involved with hernia mesh implants include:
- Hernia recurrence
- Mesh migration
- Mesh shrinkage
If you underwent hernia repair surgery and received a mesh implant After January 1, 2008 and are now suffering from complications, you may qualify for a lawsuit. It’s recommended you call an experienced product liability attorney who can learn more about your case and offer you guidance, even if you’re not sure which kind of hernia mesh implant you received.
